It's a boy! Kate Middleton and Prince William are parents now!
Prince William’s wife, Kate, has given birth to an eight-pound baby boy, Buckingham and Kensington Palace both confirmed Monday.
“We could not be happier,” Prince William said in a brief statement Monday evening.
Kensington Palace said the boy weighs 8lbs 6oz and was born at 4:24pm local time. William spent the long hours of labor at Kate’s bedside.
Prince William is not expected to speak to the media Monday night and will be staying in the hospital with his wife and child.
Kensington Palace said “the names of the baby will be announced in due course.”
It is a historic moment for the British monarchy — the couple’s unnamed first son becomes third in line for the British throne, after Prince Charles and William, and should eventually become king.
The baby’s father, William, was born in the same hospital in 1982. Many Britons remember when his mother, Princess Diana, carried him out of the hospital with Prince Charles by her side.
