The Student Killed by UIW Campus Police
A police officer for the University of Incarnate Word killed a student named Robert Cameron Redus this morning. The 23-year-old was pulled over by the cop near the San Antonio. During the traffic stop near the university’s San Antonio campus, Redus and the officer, who has been identified as Cpl. Chris Carter, got into some kind of altercation...Seconds later, multiple shots were fired and the student was dead.
Did the police officer overreact? That’s what many fellow students believe. They simply can’t comprehend how a routine traffic stop involving such a gentle soul can turn into a deadly shooting.
Alamo Heights police said Redus did not have a gun or a knife.
An unidentified man who lives in the Tree House Apartments described hearing five to six gunshots, but said he was also concerned by what he didn't hear from the officer.
"I didn't hear him say anything like, 'Get down on your hands and knees,' you know? I didn't hear him say anything. He just started shooting," the man said.
"He's not an aggressive person at all, so the story just doesn't really make sense to any of us," said Sarah Davis, a long-time friend of Redus.
Redus' family and friends had questions of their own about what happened.
